2012 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon — Team JDRF Lottery

The 2012 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon has already sold out to the general public, however, you can now participate in this rare opportunity by partnering with our team and receiving one of five (5) guaranteed spots through JDRF!

Due to the limited number of spots, JDRF will select participants through a general lottery. To enter the lottery, first let us know by Wednesday, February 15 that you are interested and complete the application form.

About the Fundraising:

Selected racers are guaranteed entry in the coveted 2012 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon and are required to meet a $3,000 minimum fundraising commitment.

80% of the minimum fundraising total is required to be raised before event day and the remaining 20% must be raised within 30 days post race, otherwise JDRF will charge the outstanding amount to your credit card.

Funds raised will benefit JDRF’s mission to find a cure for type 1 diabetes and its complications through the support of research.

About Team JDRF

  • An individual fundraising Web page will be provided to each athlete through Team JDRF
  • JDRF will provide a 16-week base-build and core program provided by PacWest Athletics and certified coaches Jay Ridgeway and Keith McDonald
  • Athletes will receive a custom Team JDRF triathlete jersey
  • Mike’s Bikes (all locations) will give all participating triathletes 10% off bikes and 15% apparel and parts

About the Event

SWIM, BIKE, RUN – On June 10, 2012, triathletes from around the globe will descend on San Francisco for one chance to attempt the impossible – ESCAPE from Alcatraz. The Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon attracts World Champions, Olympic Medalists and the best amateur triathletes from 50 states and over 40 countries. They will put their endurance to the ultimate test as they take on San Francisco’s icy waters, steep hills, and rugged terrain. Consistently ranked as a favorite event among Triathletes, this event draws thousands each summer to find out who has what it takes to ESCAPE!

The 2012 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon features a 1.5-mile swim through frigid waters from Alcatraz Island to the shores of the St. Francis Yacht Club, a grueling 18-mile bike ride, and a demanding 8-mile run through the trails of the Golden Gate Recreational Area. Set against the natural beauty of San Francisco, this thrilling triathlon is a virtual postcard of the City by the Bay.

The Fitness Festival and Expo is featured on Saturday and Sunday at Marina Green in San Francisco. This two-day festival offers the opportunity for sampling, product displays and giveaways, a sweepstakes, and other promotions. About the Coaches:

Jay Ridgeway: PacWest Athletics President and Co-founder, Jay is a veteran USA Track & Field and USA Triathlon certified coach as well as certified personal training and master-level boot camp instructor. He started competitive running at the age of 11 and completed his first triathlon back in 1985. He attended the University of Oregon and remains a competitive age-group runner and triathlete having completed multiple Boston and NYC marathons and various Ironman events. He is a USA Triathlon All-American and recently represented Team USA at the 2012 ITU Long Distance World Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada. Also known as a running biomechanics specialist and natural-running-form guru, Jay currently is the only Newton Natural Running Form certified coach in both northern and central California.

Keith McDonald: After a short career as a professional triathlete and elite level age-group runner, Keith transitioned successfully over to endurance coaching. For the past 20+ years, he has been successfully coaching professional and age-group athletes to wins at every distance. Keith began his coaching career at University of Colorado – Boulder as an assistant Cross Country and Track & Field coach and has been coaching ever since. Before starting his coaching career, Keith competed at the collegiate level as a decathlete for the University of Florida and posted top finishes in the South Eastern Conference Championships. He was a two-time qualifier for the NCAA Track and Field National Championships. Keith also made the All-American Track and Field national team and was invited to compete at the World University Games. Presently, Keith is the director of the PacWest Athletics multisport program which includes both a standard triathlon program as well as Ironman coaching.

About the Training Program:

The 16-week base-build and core program includes the following training:

  • Start date: 2/20/12
  • Training Peaks online training tool
  • Core program with Boot camp sessions
  • Weekly track sessions conveniently situated throughout the Bay Area
  • Saturday cycling rides
  • Sunday pool trainings at Tamalpais High School. This is a great location to add a run or ride after pool training.
  • Group work outs
  • Access to PacWest Athletics member base. This is a great tool for posting or joining rides, swims, or runs in your area
