by Greg Martin on 05/07/2010

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) hosted the twelfth annual Bay Area Hope Gala on Saturday evening at The Ritz Carlton, San Francisco to raise funds for diabetes research.  The money raised by the Hope Gala helps JDRF fund research that will lead to cures for millions of children and adults living with diabetes.

The Hope Gala raises funds to find cures for type 1 diabetes and its complications.  Nearly 24 million Americans live with diabetes and its complications.  It is a disease that kills one American every three minutes.  The cost of diabetes in the US exceeds $174 billion annually.  As many as 3 million Americans live with type 1 diabetes including 75,000 people living in the Bay Area. Type 1 diabetes is a disease which strikes children and adults suddenly and requires multiple injections of insulin daily or a continuous infusion of insulin through a pump. Insulin, however, is not a cure for diabetes, nor does it prevent its eventual and devastating complications which may include kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke, and amputation.
